Convenience stores in Japan do far more than sell snacks. They have ATMs that accept foreign cards, hot food, umbrellas, phone chargers, and staff who will heat things up for you.

Cash and cards

Kyoto is more cash-dependent than most visitors expect. Department stores and chains take cards everywhere, but small restaurants, older shops, temple entrance gates and market stalls are often cash only. Carrying ¥10,000–20,000 in cash is sensible.

市バスの乗り方
On most Kyoto city buses you board at the rear door and leave by the front, paying as you get off — the opposite of what many visitors expect. A flat fare applies in the central area. Tap your IC card on the way in and again on the way out, or drop the exact fare into the box beside the driver. There is a coin changer on the machine if you need it.
市バスは後ろ乗り・前降り、降車時精算です。ICカードは乗車時と降車時にタッチします。
Buses get very crowded in peak season, and large suitcases are difficult. For short hops with luggage, a taxi is often quicker and not much more expensive between two or three people.
観光シーズンの市バスは混雑します。荷物がある場合はタクシーが確実です。

Coin lockers are inside Keihan Gion-Shijo Station, two minutes away. For sending luggage ahead to your next hotel or shipping souvenirs home, convenience stores handle domestic delivery (takkyubin), and post offices handle international parcels.
