Japan is an easy country to travel with children in. Kyoto has one complication, and it is stairs.
日本は子連れ旅行がしやすい国ですが、京都には石段という難点があります。
Pushchairs in Higashiyama
ベビーカーでの移動
The eastern hills are steps, gravel and slopes. Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka are stone staircases. The approach to Kiyomizu is a long climb. Temple grounds are usually raked gravel, which a pushchair sinks into. Many halls require you to leave shoes at the door and carry the child up wooden steps.
東山は石段・砂利・坂道です。二年坂・産寧坂は階段、清水寺までは上り坂、寺の境内は砂利敷きです。ベビーカーでの移動は困難な場所が多くあります。
A carrier is more use than a pushchair for a day in Higashiyama. If you have both, take the carrier east and leave the pushchair here.
東山を歩く日は、ベビーカーより抱っこ紐が現実的です。
Easier with wheels
ベビーカーで回りやすい場所
- The Kamo River path — flat, paved, two minutes away, and runs for miles.
- 鴨川の遊歩道：平坦、舗装済み、徒歩2分。
- Maruyama Park — mostly level paths behind Yasaka Shrine.
- 円山公園：概ね平坦です。
- Nishiki Market — flat and covered, though very narrow when busy. Go before eleven.
- 錦市場：平坦ですが混雑時は狭くなります。午前中が快適です。
- Kyoto Station and the big department stores — lifts everywhere, and reliable baby rooms.
- 京都駅・百貨店：エレベーターと授乳室が整っています。
- Nanzen-ji and the Philosopher's Path — broad, flat, and pleasant.
- 南禅寺・哲学の道：広く平坦です。

Baby rooms are well provided in Japan and usually spotless. Reliable places to find one:
日本のベビールームは概ね清潔で、以下の場所に設置されています。
- Department stores — Takashimaya and Daimaru on Shijo Street both have proper nursing rooms with hot water for bottles.
- 百貨店：四条通の高島屋・大丸に授乳室（調乳用の給湯あり）。
- Railway stations — Kyoto Station has several.
- 駅：京都駅に複数あります。
- Larger convenience stores and shopping centres — a changing table in the accessible toilet is common.
- 大型店舗：多目的トイレにベビーシートがあります。
Nappies, wipes, formula and baby food are sold at any drugstore. Formula brands differ from home, so bring enough for the first day or two if your child is particular.

Breastfeeding in public is uncommon here; nursing rooms are the norm, and they are easy to find.

Eating out with children
お子様連れの外食
Small counter restaurants in Gion are often not suitable for young children, and some kaiseki places set a minimum age. Say you are bringing children when you book — nobody will be offended, and it avoids an awkward doorway conversation.
祇園のカウンター中心の店は年齢制限がある場合があります。予約時にお申し出ください。
Easier options: family restaurant chains, department store restaurant floors (usually the top floor, always with high chairs and children's sets), conveyor-belt sushi, udon shops, and the food halls in the basements of department stores.
ファミリーレストラン、百貨店のレストラン街、回転寿司、うどん店などが利用しやすいです。
High chairs and children's cutlery are widely available. Ask for kodomo yō no isu.

Practical notes
実務的な注意
- Children travel free or half price on trains and buses depending on age. Under six generally travels free.
- 鉄道・バスは年齢により無料または半額です。
- Buses are hard with a pushchair at busy times. Trains and taxis are less stressful.
- 混雑時のバスはベビーカーでは困難です。電車かタクシーが確実です。
- Taxis do not carry child seats, and are legally exempt. If that matters to you, plan around trains.
- タクシーにチャイルドシートはありません（法令上免除）。
- Summer is genuinely dangerous heat for small children. Plan indoor afternoons in July and August, and carry more water than seems necessary.
- 夏の暑さは幼児には危険です。7〜8月の午後は屋内を中心に、水分を十分にお持ちください。
- Pharmacies stock children's medicine, but for anything serious see the emergency page — Kyoto Prefecture publishes a searchable list of clinics open now, including paediatric ones.
- 小児用の市販薬は薬局にあります。受診が必要な場合は緊急時のページをご覧ください。
